About The Iron Horse Grill

This venerable building was originally home to the Armour Company Smoke House & Distribution Plant which shuttered in 1970. John D. McWilliams purchased the property in 1977 and began to convert the historic landmark into a restaurant. The original Iron Horse opened in 1986. For a decade The Iron Horse was a beloved downtown Jackson staple until two fires burned through the interior, the first in 1998 and followed by another in 1999. Half of the building was completely lost in the fires while the rest was closed and abandoned. It was fourteen years before a group of local citizens made a commitment to restore this downtown Jackson icon. The original structure was completely renovated and restored, literally brought back from its own ashes. The Iron Horse Grill is a local landmark, as important a symbol of Jackson's past as it is a sign of Jackson's future.

Tour

The Mississippi Music Experience is designed to tell the story of Mississippi, birthplace of America's Music. The visitor can travel a timeline hall starting in the 1800s and progress to the current music scene. In addition, unique life-size models of famous Mississippi musicians are provided by International Award Winning Artist Anne Robin Luckett.
Witness the historic meeting of The King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley and the Sith Lord Darth Vader, see Jaimoe seated at his famous drum kit, and pose for a picture with Pinetop Perkins and his piano.

The museum belongs to the efforts of the partnership with the Iron Horse Grill and the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, a 20-year-old non-profit showcasing Mississippi's music and musicians. For more information on the hall-of-fame, visit msmusic.com.

Teach

Your group will enjoy a private dining room located upstairs directly across from the museum. While your students enjoy their lunch you have an opportunity to review what they've seen, experienced, & learned within view of the exhibits. After lunch take a moment to tour the building and see where the original structure that survived two fires meets the updated restaurant. Before you leave be sure to gather for a class picture on the stage where contemporary musi- cians play every weekend.
